South Korean University Now Accepts Gamers as Student Athletes </div>
<br />
<a href="http://gizmodo.com/south-korean-university-now-accepts-gamers-as-student-a-1547111361">http://gizmodo.com/south-korean-university-now-accepts-gamers-as-student-a-1547111361</a><br />
<br />
I found this interesting story today while checking emails and writing cover letters. The headline is attention grabbing: gamers as athletes? Certainly, gamers are the furthest thing possible from athletes...<br />
<br />
Upon reflection, which is the role of the student athlete? In the US, student athletes bring attention and financial rewards to Universities. At Duke University, the Men's Basketball program provides a lot of notoriety and generates a huge profit for the University.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://college-sports.findthebest.com/q/10483/3448/How-much-profit-does-the-Duke-University-Basketball-team-in-Durham-North-Carolina-make" target="_blank">http://college-sports.findthebest.com/q/10483/3448/How-much-profit-does-the-Duke-University-Basketball-team-in-Durham-North-Carolina-make</a><br />
<br />
While this seems like a lot of money, the amount of money Duke makes from its Men's Basketball program pales in comparison to how much money is generated by the top 25 Football programs in the US.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-25-schools-that-make-the-most-money-in-college-football-2013-1?op=1" target="_blank">http://www.businessinsider.com/the-25-schools-that-make-the-most-money-in-college-football-2013-1?op=1</a><br />
<br />
In the US, student athletes are more athlete than student.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://digital.law.washington.edu/dspace-law/bitstream/handle/1773.1/262/81washlrev71.pdf" target="_blank">http://digital.law.washington.edu/dspace-law/bitstream/handle/1773.1/262/81washlrev71.pdf</a><br />
<br />
Moreover, many student athletes in the US are only enrolled in University programs as a stepping stone to professional leagues, with varying degrees of success.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/where-are-they-now-alabama-football-2013-1?op=1#ixzz2IAaGyWp6" target="_blank">http://www.businessinsider.com/where-are-they-now-alabama-football-2013-1?op=1#ixzz2IAaGyWp6</a><br />
<br />
In the US, many student athletes do not graduate and if they do, it is often the result of taking less challenging courses.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/15/the-myth-of-the-student-athlete/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0" target="_blank">http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/15/the-myth-of-the-student-athlete/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0</a><br />
<br />
With this in mind, I think Chung-Ang University has really just made a logical step by accepting gamers as student athletes. If one of the purposes of student sports programs is to generate notoriety and financial rewards, accepting gamers will accomplish both tasks nicely. Competitive gaming is mainstream in Korea: Starcraft matches are televised. Another factor is I believe that accepting gamers as student athletes will attract better students than many of the student athletes in US schools.<br />
<br />
When I look back on my University days (so very long ago), I remember that many of the most prolific gamers and hackers were enrolled in Engineering and Computer Science and most of them graduated to successful careers in their dedicated fields of study. In this case, I think gamers may actually portray the role of student athlete more authentically than football and basketball players in US Universities do.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">T The first step to adult education
is deciding what course/program to take.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">
</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">When deciding which course or program, we often have to ask ourselves:</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 11.25pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">What purpose will this

</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 11.25pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Once we have chosen the
course, we need to ask ourselves what we need to do to complete the course and
to get the most out of it.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">For me, PIPD
3240 was a course I wanted to avoid.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I
heard horror stories about it from others in my PIPD courses saying “stuff does
not work”, “there is no direction”, “do the low tech, it is safer”, “there is
no course content”, “I am glad it is over”.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 11.25pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">In retrospect, I think many
of us fear change. Also many of us in
the program have become instructors because we enjoy teaching a subject area we
know about and have expertise in. Our
expertise gives us comfort, there is little risk, we ‘know our stuff’ and take
pride in our strengths in this area.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 11.25pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">All of this leads to a bit
of an existentialist crisis and questions start to creep into your head such as:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">

<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"> What am I doing
here?</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"> What am I forgetting? </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"> Am I the only one

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I then started having an

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was required to read the text, Teaching Naked by Jose Bowen, and make
journal entries. I found this difficult
because I am used to discussing books in class with classmates and my
instructor to share interpretations and ideas.
In PIPD 3240 there is no discussion, you just read the book and post
your journal. The difficult part is of
this is determining if I was supposed to write an academic interpretation or an
emotion reflection. The answer was both –
I was supposed to use the “focused conversation model” which requires you to
consider objective, reflective, interpretive and decisional interpretations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Next came a deluge of Twitter, Facebook, Blog and Forum posts and
comments (Social Media option) with assignment rubrics to guide me. Slowly, I navigated around the forums, found
the resources I needed (there are a ton of great things online) and got into a
groove. I periodically checked the
rubrics for each assignment and asked my instructor questions when I needed
to. In the end, despite my ‘self’ I got
it all done and realized I may have learned a thing or two.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

few occasions and two things he said to me have been the source </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">of much reflection:</span><o:p></o:p></span></h1>
<h1 style="background: white; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">1.
Many cultures have a story of a Great Flood.<o:p></o:p></span></h1>
<h1 style="background: white; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">2. Nature
is talking to us all the time, we just have to take the time to listen.<o:p></o:p></span></h1>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
Much of the way we learn is through literature and other
sources of storytelling. Narrative, or
the telling of stories in entwined in every culture and age. Moral dilemmas have been a feature of
literature since Sophocles wrote Oedipus Rex.
Throughout history, literature and dramatic works have been the source
of ethical and moral debate. Much of the
allure of the cinema is how open to debate the conclusion of a film is (what is
Rosebud in Citizen Kane or what is in the brief case in Pulp Fiction)<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
Alternative endings, unreliable narrators (The Good
Soldier) have made many of us become deconstructive and structuralist
viewers/readers.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
We view scenes and read passages in movies/literature with
a jaundiced eye. We KNOW something is
wrong. We are always looking for the
‘angle’. Nothing is at face value: even
children’s animated features have a ‘twist’.
Personally, I enjoy ‘figuring’ out the twists of a plot or deciphering
the truth out of the puzzle presented by unreliable narrators.<o:p></o:p></div>
<h1 style="background: white; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;">“Truth is
stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to
possibilities; Truth isn't.” </span><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; color: #181818; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 10.5pt;">―<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></span><a href="http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1244.Mark_Twain"><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; color: #666600; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 10.5pt;">Mark Twain</span></a><o:p></o:p></h1>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
The downside to all this is that fiction or true fantasy is
a lot less common in recent film and literature. Of the top films nominated for Best Picture Oscars
in the last ten years, only Toy Story 3 (2010) and has a <i>purely</i> fictional plot. Although
many of the films have some or many fictional elements, the majority of the
films nominated for Best Picture are steeply based either on real events or
events which are very realistic.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture</a><o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
What does this mean?
It means that people often like to experience stories they can related
to in some way or know something about, in other words people enjoy narratives
(stories) that align with their own lives.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
This is borne out by a recent article by Lee Siegel in the
New York Times titled, “Is the News Replacing Literature?”<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">In
this article, Siegel points to recent stories in the popular press, the accusations
of sexual abuse by Woody Allen of his step daughter, Dylan Farrow specifically,
and suggests that more people discuss news stories than they do literature,
film or other sources of ethical dilemmas as they did in the past.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">Siegel
goes on to say:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<b><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">“you could be
forgiven for feeling that literary art…has been largely displaced by life—or,
at least, by the pictures of life ceaselessly produced by the all-powerful
media—as the realm in which we lose ourselves in a moral problem….This is not
just ‘the news’. This is a piece of reality so dense that it goes beyond art in
illuminating just how nebulous reality is. (But, then, the news stopped
reporting reality and started to constitute a new layer of reality years ago.)<span class="apple-converted-space"><o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">I believe that Siegel’s point is that
traditionally literature (I would argue film as well) was the most common
source of ethos and as such promoted a forum for the discussion of ethics and
morality. In the society we live in
today, our most common source of ethos is the news, which on the surface seems
like a good thing – after all, what can be a better teacher than reality?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">The problem is that parables,
allegories, myths, legends, etc. are carefully constructed in order to engage
our minds and to teach important lessons.
Plato’s Allegory of the cave is not just a story of people imprisoned in
a cave and not knowing the truth about the outside world – it is also a
depiction of the illusion of self-limitation and for only accepting things we
think we know (our reality) and the dangers of not enlightening ourselves to
greater truths (new discovery and knowledge) by holding on to only what we
believe and giving into fear when our reality is challenged.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">In conclusion, my point is this; storytelling
plays an important role in the development of our minds. Storytelling and analogies are the most
typical sources of discussions which facilitate the promotion of critical
thinking skills. If we draw all of our
discussion from the news, the classic sources of debate and philosophical
education are lost and we become lost intellectually as a result.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">What is your view – have I perched
myself too far over the edifice of a philosophical cliff? What are your views?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">The easy answer is that it is typically about our favorite
topic, ourselves. More often than not,
most posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, etc. are about what we or
our friends are doing. Yes, there are
also posts that are for business, marketing and educational purposes as well;
however, the majority of posts on Social Networks are just that ‘social’.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

beings, humans spend a considerable amount of time communicating with one
another. In his article, “</span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">The Neuroscience of Everybody's

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: 15pt;">When
I look back on some of the courses I took recently, I find myself asking 'what
did I learn' and 'who did I learn it from'?</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">In one course in particular I found I had to teach myself the
course after it was over as a large portion of our class time was spent jumping
back and forth regarding the assignments... If I did an evaluation now as
opposed to as the course was ending, my answers would be quite different.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

usually grants us perspective and clarity in all matters.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

one course is that as an instructor it is easy to lose direction when you let
others 'steer the bus'. In the next course, I saw confusion coming and
stepped in to help keep the bus on track (must be all the years of rugby and
team work). Previously, I would have been hesitant to step in; however, after
the experience of having my learning compromised, I felt the need to be

<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<strong><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Dr. Gravestock: </span></strong><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">My
opinion is that they should be available to students; it closes that loop.
Students can see that the feedback they’ve provided is being used.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

course evaluations don’t give much direction on what they need to do to
improve. What would you say to that?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<strong><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Dr. Gravestock: </span></strong><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">I
would relate that back in part to the instrument itself. Often the questions
are not the right questions. General questions about the instructor’s
effectiveness aren’t going to tell you what’s going on. Also, faculty are often
just given this information and no one guides them through it. Educational
developers are really well-positioned to help instructors in interpreting the
data and figuring out next steps – a plug for my profession!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Section 4B of Gravestock’s report discusses the validity and
reliability of students as evaluators and concludes that:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">1. "Students are reliable and effective at evaluating
teaching behaviours (for example, presentation, clarity, organization and
active learning techniques), the amount they have learned, the ease or
difficulty of their learning experience in the course, the workload in the
course and the validity and value of the assessment used in the course"
(Gravestock, 2008)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">2. However, "students may not be qualified to assess the
level, amount and accuracy of course content and an instructor’s knowledge of,
or competency in, his or her discipline. [Moreover] "Such factors cannot
be accurately assessed by students due to their limited experience and
knowledge of a particular discipline. It has also been suggested that students
are unable to evaluate instructor grading practices and methods of delivery,
appropriateness of selected readings and whether instructors present any bias
in their delivery of course" (Gravestock, 2008)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

teaching effectiveness?” by Philip Stark, a statistics professor at Berkley
University suggests Student Evaluations are not as effective as administrators
believe they are. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Starks key points are:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">● <strong>How good are the statistics?</strong> Teaching
evaluation data are typically spotty and the techniques used to summarize
evaluations and compare instructors or courses are generally statistically
inappropriate.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">● <strong>What do the data measure?</strong> While students are in
a good position to evaluate some aspects of teaching, there is compelling
empirical evidence that student evaluations are only tenuously connected to
overall teaching effectiveness.<a href="http://teaching.berkeley.edu/blog/evaluating-evaluations-part-1#_ftn2"><span style="color: #0088cc; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font: major-fareast;">[2]</span></a> Responses to general questions, such
as overall effectiveness, are particularly influenced by factors unrelated to
learning outcomes, such as the gender, ethnicity, and attractiveness of the
instructor.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">● <strong>What’s better?</strong> Other ways of evaluating
teaching can be combined with student teaching evaluations to produce a more
reliable, meaningful, and useful composite; such methods were used in a pilot
in the Department of Statistics in spring 2013 and are now department policy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">This blog post was
inspired by a forum post by my classmate, Andrey Murphy, in my PIPD 3240 course
at Vancouver Community College.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">There are plenty of
Pros and Cons to Online Education.
Overall, it is my view that most learners are better served by
traditional classroom education or a hybrid of the two. I believe Online
Education has some my key challenges to overcome:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Homework is still homework<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">A Flipped Classroom is another term for
pre-assigned reading (or online research) ie ‘homework’ this is only successful
if learners buy in and do it; otherwise, instead of prepared, engaged learners
your end up with resentful, overwhelmed people who give up.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Lack of Modeling by the instructor<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">There is not an abundance of modeling by
instructors in online courses. Many
students learn by modeling the behavior of instructors and classmates. As my classmate Barb Horton put it, ‘monkey
see, monkey do’ is a great way to model expected performance.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Lack of extrinsic motivation to learn<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Online is all about self-motivation (intrinsic); if
you desire or require a lot of interaction you are out of luck. An example of this is when it came to writing
journal entries for my PIPD3240 course.
I basically read a passage, wrote my observations and that was it. No insights from anyone, so I only learned
what I thought. From my experiences in
teaching and studying literature, most of the best insights arise from a
discussion with the instructor and classmates. Opportunity lost.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Lectures are still lectures<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Watching a video can be instructive and
entertaining; however, it is not a replacement for real life interaction,
activities and discussion. See above.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">What actual skills are the students learning?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Are we teaching critical thinking? Are we encouraging the development of new
meanings and understandings? Are we demonstrating
for them how to perform a task or skill?
Sure, learners are encouraged to figure it out for themselves; however,
how do they know if they are doing it correctly or not? Bad grades? Great way to frustrate a learner.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Lack of the Institutional/Academic Post-Secondary ‘Experience’.<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Logging into a course does not make you feel like
you are part of something: a large part of the Post-Secondary Experience is
being on campus, meeting new instructors, meeting other students and
experiencing the campus. Some of the
best friends I have, I met twenty-five years at university (yes, I am
old). Banging away at a laptop does not
feel like academic life.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Like said by
others, online courses are accessible 24-7 and you can adjust your schedule to accommodate
your learning. Also, with the exception of VCC, online courses can be
much less expensive and you do not have to commute, buy meals, etc.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">However, there is
very limited interaction and what exists is not the same as face to face
interaction with the instructor and fellow students. In my courses at the
King Edward Campus, I got to know and develop bonds with many of my fellow
learners in class sizes from 22-24. In this class of 39, I have only sort
of gotten to know 3 new people?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">I found that
interacting with other students helped me complete my assignments in other
courses (what is a Dacum?, which chapter?), this online course less so. I
realize that the answer to every question is self-direction; however, I
sometimes feel it can lead to misdirection and when it happens it is our own
fault?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">I had an A' Ha
moment the other day while tutoring a student. She was tired, had little
energy (it is hard to go to school after being in school all day, or work for
that matter). I changed things around and turned her into my teacher and
we practiced articles, grammar and spelling by her writing a story and
correcting it as we when along. I have no idea how to do this online?
How do I read a room online? <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">The only way I can
think of it working is maybe in a literature course and using surveys and
prompts for students to respond to; however, this relies totally on them doing
the work. At the end, I can assess their assignments; however, I do not

delivered solely online may be fine for highly skilled, highly motivated
people, but they are inappropriate for struggling students who make up a

Biomedical Ethics has been a concern. In
Western Medicine, physicians take the Hippocratic Oath. Every culture has its own codes of ethics
regarding medical practises; however, one commonality is that every culture
encounters biomedical dilemmas in one form or another. Listed below are some links for studying biomedical
ethics in general:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">By definition, Social Media is a means of delivering a
message (media) which is accessible to anyone on the internet (social). One of the negative aspects of social media
is that although it may attract many positive interactions and opportunities to
build positive networking opportunities, it also attracts much negativity in
the form of unwarranted criticism and inappropriate posts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">

North Vancouver) yesterday and we talked about running a small business and the
expense in time and cost of advertising.
I told him about the Media Enhanced Learning course I am taking and mentioned
using facebook as forms of free advertising.
“The problem with facebook is there are too many people who have and
agenda and post negative things about you,” was Chris, the owner of Eunos’
first comment. He went on to say that he
has worked too hard to build a solid reputation, to be a specialist and to
provide good service to his clients to “have someone with an axe to grind to go
on facebook and make up anything they want about me”.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

comments would far exceed the positive comments on Google+, facebook and the
local special interest forums.
Interestingly, I found that many of the comments made about our business
were not by clients, but by our competitors and their friends. In many cases, they had never even visited
our stores or described the staff of a different business (our competitor)
altogether. Once they are out there,
negative comments are difficult to overcome.
There is no way to please all the people all of the time; however, here
are some ways to manage your page and limit the negativity:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">I was watching the Noon News Hour today (February 9th,
2014) and there was a story (sorry no link) about a study by two Arizona State
Professors about how texting is changing the development of the English language. In short they are saying the Millennial
generation modifies English while texting.
Millennials have developed a modern more simplistic ‘shorthand’ in order
to speed up the texting process.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">While researching this topic on the internet, I found this TED
Talk by John McWhorter titled “Texting is Killing Language – JK!”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">http://www.ted.com/talks/john_mcwhorter_txtng_is_killing_language_jk.html<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Mr. McWhorter views texting as an evolution of social/cultural
communication and conversation, not as a replacement for formal written language. He cites examples of changes in language over
the years and how the English language has become less formal over the years.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">I have to admit I disagree with Mr. McWhorter to the extent that
I notice my native speaking people using ‘text-language’ in emails and in some
formal corressponsdance. I have taught
my 18 year-old that this is not acceptable; moreover, I have imparted to her
that using proper grammar is an important aspect of presenting ourselves to
others.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">I remember the first time I encountered a ‘text-speak’ text from
a rugby coach. I found that reading the
message diminished by impression of him.
Until the text, I admired his intellect.
After the text, I was surprized that someone my age did not have even
rudimentary grammar skills.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Here is a link discussing how an SFU Professor believes texting
is contributing to poor grammar skills:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">

between Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">It
seems I have had digital games, music and information around most of my life -

with technology.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">

agree with Marc Prensky’s statement that “today’s students are no longer
the people our educational system was designed to teach”. I believe this is part of the reason why the Government of British Columbia has recently made changes to the curriculum to address the outdated nature of the current curriculum.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">I also
found Marc Prensky’s assertion that being Digital Immigrants gives us an ‘accent’
compared to Digital Natives. We do speak
the same language; however thing we say may be misinterpreted because of
technology. I remember a lecture I
attended in University where the Professor was talking about generational gaps
and how as technology increased, the evolution of society and generational gaps

<strong>Smart Phones in the Class</strong></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
This post is inspired by a post by C.Deverell Cromie, In his post, Dev talks about using student's smartphones to create quizzes and perform lesson reviews among other ideas. I believe student's phones are potentially great learning tools. </div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Almost every student I work with has a smart phone (even some of the 5 year olds!). Many of the students I tutor use their phones to translate some words during lessons. As instructors we think they just use them for games, texting or social media; however, as my 18 year-old daughter has explained to me, there is so much more you can do with them as we all know (TED talks, research, Web 2.0 tools, etc.).</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Last spring, I used Google Docs with a student. I had her send me her drafts (rough, secondary, final) via Google Docs and I was able to make corrections and prove feedback to her very quickly. She did all her work with her phone and I did some of my reviewing using my phone as well. Faster, cheaper, quicker and everythinger (not an actual word, but it conveys the meaning) than having to meet in person.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Here is a link I found regarding the use of smartphones in the classroom. I especially like the part about educational games.</div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Is Poetry Making a Comeback? (Or Did It Never Really Leave)</span></b></div>
<br />
While taking a course at <b>VCC</b> on delivering instruction, a classmate and I teamed up on a poetry mini-lesson. I was surprised by the positive reception our lesson received.<br />
<br />
Upon reflection, I think that more than ever our society is 'ready' for poetry.<br />
<br />
Shorter poems lend themselves to twitter and to texts and are easy to take in and reflect upon in today's fast paced world.<br />
<br />
Also, song and rap lyrics are often poetic in nature and flow with the beat of the music they are accompanying.<br />
<br />
Poetry is typically a language of emotion, eliciting strong emotions and feelings.<br />

<b><span style="font-size: x-large;">The Road Not Taken </span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And sorry I could not travel both </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And be one traveler, long I stood </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And looked down one as far as I could </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5 </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then took the other, as just as fair, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And having perhaps the better claim, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because it was grassy and wanted wear; </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Though as for that the passing there </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Had worn them really about the same, 10 </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And both that morning equally lay </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In leaves no step had trodden black. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh, I kept the first for another day! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yet knowing how way leads on to way, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15 </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I shall be telling this with a sigh </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Somewhere ages and ages hence: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took the one less traveled by, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And that has made all the difference.</div>

Use the parking lot!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/178568/the-parking-lot-is-a-place-where-topics-can-be-put-or-parked-for-later-discussion-during-a-presentation.-how-would-you-translate-that-idea-into-spanish#q178568">http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/178568/the-parking-lot-is-a-place-where-topics-can-be-put-or-parked-for-later-discussion-during-a-presentation.-how-would-you-translate-that-idea-into-spanish#q178568</a><br />
<br />
This is a great way to acknowledge a learner's question, encourage them to find their own answers and to assist one another!<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">ELMO Visual Presenters: Old School, but still Cool!</span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">While taking a Foundations in Adult Education Course (PIPD 3100) at Vancouver Community College, the technology that I was most impressed
with was the Visualizer (aka ELMO). I am especially in awe of the original
analog versions.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I2_fM-g5xI">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I2_fM-g5xI</a><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">I know it is old technology; however, the ability to place
something on it and project an analog of it on the screen is amazing to me.
I wish we had them when I was previously a student. ELMO devices have a variety of uses. You are able to project pretty much anything
that fits on it. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">ELMO devices also eliminate the need for making multiple copies
of documents, which is good for the environment. For example, an instructor is able to
increase the size of a newspaper article and discuss it with the class rather
than having to print copies for everyone.
A poetry student is able to place their poem on the ELMO and easily
display it, rather than printing many copies to handout.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Being involved with technology and music reproduction over the
years, there is a certain allure to the analog domain. Digital Music
sounds like something is ‘missing’ especially when it comes to soundstage (size
of the aural and imaging When you create a digital representation of something,
you are sampling it or reducing it to fluctuations or differences.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">When you create an analogue of something, you are creating a
close likeness or record, not a sample. Seeing an analogue of a porcelain
figurine on a screen is more effective (and affective) than seeing a digital
picture of the figurine.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Digitizing the technology of ELMO devices has made them more
affordable. They can be found for as
inexpensively for <b>$39.99 used!</b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;"><a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/Elmo-EV-200-Document-Viewer-Visual-Presenter-Camera-Portable-Adapter-45768-/141170377503">http://www.ebay.com/itm/Elmo-EV-200-Document-Viewer-Visual-Presenter-Camera-Portable-Adapter-45768-/141170377503</a><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Newer ELMO devices have even more uses as outlined by the video
linked below.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
